With Asus already offering two motherboards with integrated watercooling solutions, MSI has recently come up with designs for their own first watercooled motherboard. No doubt the rest of the manufacturers are not far behind as it would appear that this is the direction high end motherboards will take into 2008.
The Asus Blitz Extreme and Asus Maximus Formula (Special Edition) both feature small in-built barbs on the northbridge chipsets, the P35 and X38 respectively. MSI recently announced their vision of proceedings with their watercooled MSI X38 Diamond 'Hydrogen'. Featuring a watercooling solution that cools the MOSFETS, the X38 northbridge chipset and ICH9R southbridge chipset, this takes one step further than Asus with a notable advantage. MSI have opted to leave the board barb-less to allow the user to specify what size barbs they require to maximise compatibility with current watercooling setups.

With very little between the packages that motherboard manufacturers offer, a simple customer-centric take on the development like this might be enough to entice some new custom towards MSI's high end products. We look forward to future announcements and developments to see just how popular this might turn out to be. What do you think? Rather have a standard silent heatpipe solution? Standard block heatsink? Actively cooled, fan based heatsinks? Have your say in the forums! |
